⚠️ The Golden Rule: Volumetric Weight

Most first-timers miss this and get surprised by their invoice. Carriers always charge based on whichever is greater: actual weight OR volumetric weight.

Volumetric Weight (kg) = L (cm) × W (cm) × H (cm) ÷ 6000
📦 Express only (DHL / FedEx / UPS): divide by 5000 instead
🧥 Example: Box of clothes Actual weight: 10 kg
Dimensions: 60 × 50 × 40 cm
Vol. weight: 60×50×40 ÷ 6000 = 20 kg
You pay for 20 kg, not 10!
⚙️ Example: Metal parts Actual weight: 80 kg
Dimensions: 40 × 30 × 20 cm
Vol. weight: 40×30×20 ÷ 6000 = 4 kg
You pay for 80 kg (actual wins)

👉 Action: Always ask your supplier for exact carton dimensions (L × W × H in cm) AND weight before requesting any freight quote.

5 Tips Before You Ship

Most first-timers lose money on shipping. These tips will save you hundreds of dollars.

1
Always get 3 quotes
Prices vary 30–50% between forwarders. Compare online platforms then negotiate with local Guangzhou agents for the best deal.
2
Calculate volumetric weight first
Ask your supplier for exact carton dimensions (L×W×H cm). Use ÷6000 formula. Carriers charge whichever is greater — actual or volumetric.

Example: 50×40×30 cm ÷ 6000 = 10 kg vol. weight. If actual is 5 kg, you pay for 10 kg.
3
Check import duties before ordering
Calculate customs duties BEFORE placing your order. Use your country's HS code lookup. Some products carry 20–40% duty — this changes your entire margin.
4
Request sea + air quote together
Always ask for both simultaneously. Sometimes the price gap doesn't justify waiting 30+ extra days. Run the numbers before deciding.
5
Insure every shipment
Cargo insurance costs ~0.5–1% of cargo value (varies by carrier). For any order over $2,000 it's non-negotiable. Most forwarders offer it as an add-on.
