🛂 First: Do You Actually Need a Visa?

Esim

Before applying for anything, check your passport nationality.

China’s current visa-free policy allows eligible ordinary passport holders from a number of countries to enter China without a visa for short stays, including business activities and participation in exhibitions.

For the countries covered by the current unilateral visa-free policy, stays of up to 30 days are permitted for qualifying purposes such as business, tourism, family visits, exchanges, transit, and attending exhibitions. The current policy for 48 countries runs through December 31, 2026. Russia has a separate extension through December 31, 2027, while Brunei’s policy has no stated expiration date.

Countries currently covered include:

Europe

France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Slovenia, Slovakia, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Monaco, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Malta, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and others included in the official list.

Asia-Pacific & Middle East

Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Brunei, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and others covered by the current policy.

Americas

Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and other countries included in the official list.

🇨🇳 Attending Canton Fair without a visa

If you are eligible for China’s visa-free policy, you can attend the Canton Fair during a qualifying short stay.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifically confirms that eligible visa-free travellers may enter China for exhibitions and conferences, provided they meet the other conditions of the visa-free policy. It also recommends carrying supporting documents such as an invitation letter, flight tickets and hotel bookings that are consistent with your stated purpose of travel.

💡

Tip: Even when you do not need a visa, carrying your Canton Fair invitation and other travel documents is a sensible precaution.

❌ If You Are Not Visa-Exempt: You May Need an M Visa

If your passport is not covered by a visa-free arrangement, you will generally need to obtain a Chinese visa before travelling.

For people travelling to China for commercial and trade activities, the appropriate category is generally the M Visa.

The M Visa is intended for commercial and trade activities, including business visits and participation in trade fairs. Current Chinese visa application guidance lists a trade-fair invitation as an acceptable supporting document for an M Visa application.

What about a Tourist (L) Visa?

If the primary purpose of your trip is commercial activity at Canton Fair – such as meeting suppliers, sourcing products or conducting business negotiations – you should not simply choose an L Visa because you are also visiting Guangzhou as a tourist.

Your visa category should match the actual purpose of your trip.

For example, we recently assisted a Turkish traveller who had previously applied for an L Visa through an agency to travel to Guangzhou for the Canton Fair. His application was refused and he was told that he needed to apply for a Business (M) Visa instead.

The lesson is simple:

Choose the visa category that matches the real purpose of your trip.

If your trip is primarily tourism, an L Visa may be appropriate. If it is primarily commercial activity, an M Visa is the relevant category to investigate.

📜 The Canton Fair Invitation Letter

If you need an M Visa to attend the Canton Fair, the official Canton Fair invitation is an important document for your application.

And there is good news:

The official Canton Fair invitation can be obtained through the Canton Fair’s own Buyer Service System.

You do not need to pay an agency simply to obtain the official Canton Fair invitation.

The official Canton Fair website provides a dedicated process for overseas buyers who need an invitation for a China visa application.

⚠️ Don’t confuse two different invitations

There are different types of business invitation documents used for Chinese visas.

For a Canton Fair visitor, the relevant document may be the official Canton Fair invitation, rather than paying a private agency for a separate invitation from an unrelated Chinese company.

Visa authorities can still request additional documents depending on your nationality, application location and individual circumstances.

So never assume that an invitation letter alone guarantees a visa. The final decision – including whether a visa is issued, its validity, number of entries and permitted stay – belongs to the Chinese consular authority.

📋 M Visa Document Checklist

The exact requirements can vary according to your nationality and the country where you apply.

However, applicants should generally prepare the following.

Essential Documents

1. Valid Passport

Your passport should normally have:

The Chinese Embassy in Bulgaria specifically states that a passport with less than six months’ validity or fewer than two visa pages cannot be used for a visa application.

2. Visa Application Form

You must complete the Chinese visa application form according to the instructions of the Chinese embassy, consulate, or Chinese Visa Application Service Center responsible for your application.

Make sure that:

Do not rush through the form. Small inconsistencies between your application, passport, invitation letter, and other documents can result in delays or a request for additional information.

3. Recent Passport-Style Photo

You will normally need to provide a recent passport-style photograph that meets the Chinese visa photo requirements.

The photograph should be:

Because photo requirements can be updated, check the current instructions of the Chinese embassy or Visa Application Center where you will submit your application before taking your final photo.

4. Canton Fair Invitation Letter

For an M Visa application, the invitation letter is one of the most important supporting documents.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that an M Visa applicant should provide commercial-activity documents or an invitation from a trade partner in China, including an invitation related to an economic or trade fair. The invitation should contain information about the applicant, the planned visit, and the inviting organization or person.

For Canton Fair visitors, this is where your official Canton Fair invitation letter becomes particularly useful.

The invitation should generally identify:

How to Get the Canton Fair Invitation Letter

The Canton Fair has moved its buyer services to the official Buyer Service System.

For overseas buyers who have previously attended the Fair onsite, the official procedure is:

Registration/Login → Invitation Letter → My Invitation Letters → Apply for Invitation Letter

After checking your personal and company information, you can submit the application and then view, print, or download the invitation letter. The Canton Fair states that existing BEST account information was transferred to the new Buyer Service System.

New Buyers vs. Returning Buyers

If this is your first time attending the Canton Fair onsite, the process is slightly different.

New overseas buyers generally need to:

  1. Register or log into the Buyer Service System.
  2. Apply for an Overseas Buyer Badge.
  3. Complete their personal and company information.
  4. Upload the required identification document and photo.
  5. Submit the Buyer Badge application.
  6. Select the option to generate the Canton Fair invitation letter simultaneously.
  7. Open Invitation Letter → My Invitation Letters to view, print, or download the invitation.

The official Canton Fair instructions distinguish between new and returning overseas buyers and provide separate application routes.

Important: The Canton Fair invitation is not itself a Chinese visa. It is a supporting document for your visa application where a visa is required.

5. Proof of Legal Residence or Stay

If you are applying for a Chinese visa in a country where you are not a citizen, you may need to prove that you are legally residing or staying there.

For example, depending on your circumstances, this could include:

The exact requirement depends on the Chinese embassy, consulate, or Visa Application Center handling your application.

China’s current visa instructions specifically state that applicants should submit proof of legal stay or residence where applicable.

6. Proof of Business Activity

Although requirements vary by location and individual case, it is sensible to prepare documents that demonstrate the genuine business purpose of your trip.

Depending on your situation, useful supporting documents may include:

Not every applicant will be asked for all of these documents.

The Chinese visa authority can request additional supporting documents if necessary.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for Your China M Visa

Once you have prepared your documents, the actual application process is usually straightforward. If you haven’t followed our full week-by-week timeline yet, our Canton Fair 140 Preparation Guide walks through everything in order.

1

Check Whether You Actually Need an M Visa

Before preparing a visa application, check China’s current visa-free policies. As of September 2026, holders of valid ordinary passports from 50 countries can enter China visa-free for business, tourism, family/friends visits, exchange, and transit for stays of up to 30 days, subject to the applicable conditions.

If your nationality qualifies and your Canton Fair trip fits the permitted purpose and duration, you may not need to apply for an M Visa at all. See our full China Visa-Free Entry 2026 guide for the complete country list.

Always verify your eligibility immediately before traveling, because visa-free policies and conditions can change. If you are not eligible for visa-free entry, continue with the M Visa process below.

2

Obtain Your Canton Fair Invitation

Register or log into the official Canton Fair Buyer Service System and apply for your invitation (see the full steps above). For returning buyers:

Invitation Letter → My Invitation Letters → Apply for Invitation Letter

For first-time buyers, complete the Overseas Buyer Badge application and select the option to generate the invitation letter where available. Download and save a digital copy of your invitation. It is also wise to keep a printed copy with your travel documents.

3

Complete the Visa Application

Complete the Chinese visa application using the official procedure required in the country where you are applying. Double-check every important detail against your passport and invitation letter, paying particular attention to:

  • Passport number
  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Occupation
  • Company information
  • Travel dates
  • Purpose of travel
  • Intended places of visit

How Long Does a China M Visa Take?

Processing times vary by country, application center, season, and individual case. For a Canton Fair trip, it is better not to leave the application until the last minute.

💡

Practical tip: Do not book a non-refundable flight based solely on an estimated visa-processing time.

M Visa Fees

The total cost of obtaining a Chinese M Visa depends on several factors. You may need to pay:

Fees can also differ according to nationality, number of entries, and the country where you apply. For this reason, avoid relying on old fee tables found on travel blogs. Check the current fee schedule published by the Chinese embassy, consulate, or Visa Application Center responsible for your application.

Single-Entry vs. Multiple-Entry M Visa

The number of entries and validity period of a Chinese M Visa are not automatically the same for every applicant. Depending on your nationality, circumstances, application history, and the decision of the visa authority, an M Visa may be issued with different:

Do not assume that requesting a multiple-entry visa guarantees that you will receive one. The consular authority makes the final decision based on the individual application.

Do You Need a Canton Fair Invitation to Enter China?

Not necessarily.

The Canton Fair invitation and the Chinese visa are two different things. The invitation is primarily a document associated with attending the Canton Fair and can serve as supporting documentation for a visa application.

Whether you need a Chinese visa depends on your nationality and the rules applicable to your trip. Under China’s current visa-free policy, eligible ordinary passport holders from certain countries can enter China for business purposes for up to 30 days without obtaining a visa in advance, provided they meet the applicable conditions.

If you are not eligible for visa-free entry, you should arrange the appropriate Chinese visa before traveling.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Applying for the Wrong Visa

A Canton Fair trip involving genuine commercial activities generally falls within the scope of business travel. Do not simply select a visa category based on what another traveler used — check the current official requirements for your case.

2. Waiting Until the Last Minute

Canton Fair takes place during busy travel periods. If you need a visa, start the process early enough to deal with unexpected delays.

3. Using an Old Invitation Letter

If your travel dates or personal information change, check whether your invitation remains appropriate. When a new invitation letter is applied for, the previous one becomes invalid.

4. Making Inconsistent Applications

Your passport, visa application, invitation letter, company information, and travel dates should tell the same story. Avoid unexplained differences.

5. Assuming Visa Rules Are the Same Everywhere

A traveler applying in France may have a different submission process from someone applying in Turkey, Bulgaria, the United States, or another country. Always check the Chinese diplomatic mission or Visa Application Center responsible for your application.
